The BarriersFamilies who are stuck in the middle that make too much for childcare assistance or don’t make enough to pay for aftercare or childcare services without creating hardship. Many families work outside the city limits and commute can't find services to accommodate their hours. Many parent are force to have latchkey kid who returns from school to an empty home, left at home with little parental supervision, because their parent or parents are away at work.
This often leave them with 3 choices stay home with the children, quit their jobs or leave the kids home alone. 'The effects of being a latchkey child differ with age. Loneliness, boredom and fear are most common for those younger than 10 years of age. In the early teens, there is a greater susceptibility to peer pressure, potentially resulting in such behaviors as alcohol abuse, drug abuse, sexual promiscuity and smoking. The behaviors might stem from "unspent energy, peer pressure to misbehave, or hostility because of the lack of appropriate adult attention.
